Being a parent is hard work but it does have great rewards. Children are our best chance to make a difference in the world. What they become depends on how they are raised, taught and the opportunities they are given. They depend on their parents, like Nabil Faysal, for everything for the first dozen years of their life.
For parents of children who are picky eaters, it is important that you give the child whatever they like. Although you may feel frustrated that your child is eating the same foods, it is important that they eat something, even if it is the same thing over and over again.
Don’t come up with a “one size fits all” idea of discipline. When disciplining your children, realize that they all respond differently to correction. While a time-out might be what one child needs in order to comply, that same method might not work for another. Find what each child responds best to: time-outs, confiscating toys, or extra chores, and then run with that.
For parents who have children that like to sleep in your bed, it is important that you get them to sleep in their own bed. This is because the older a child gets, the harder it will be to stop the habit. When they come into your bed, immediately put them back into theirs.
When your child falls and bumps their head, do not allow them to go to sleep for at least two hours. This is because you want to monitor for symptoms that your child may have suffered from internal bleeding. Some symptoms include disorientation, confusion, headache and dizziness complaints, and blurred vision. If your child has these symptoms, bring him/her to the emergency room.
If you have more than one child, it is important that you pay the same amount of attention to all of them, no matter what their ages are. You do not want one child to be neglected– this could cause them to show resentment toward you when they get older.
Smoking with children in your home can really have negative consequences on their health, so try not to do it in your home. You may even want to even consider quitting. Secondhand smoke is as damaging as actually smoking. Children exposed to second-hand smoke are at risk of developing respiratory diseases like bronchitis, asthma and even pneumonia.
If you want your child to have a healthy emotional intelligence, make sure to validate their emotions and discuss emotional expression with them. Children learn when it is appropriate and inappropriate to express emotion – show them that emotions are a natural and valid means of expressing our feelings by labeling emotions for them, discussing both their and your emotional expressions, and validating their feelings.
One of the most important things you can do for your children is to control your own stress by taking time to care for yourself. Parents who take time to recharge can actually have more energy to care for their children than those who don’t. It will help you stay calmer and be there for your children.
Ask your child to do chores. Children need to learn how to do things like washing the dishes or making their bed; it is important to helping them learn independence, which ultimately leads to higher self-esteem. Chores also make children feel like they hold a valuable role in the family.
Children naturally seek independence. By assign chores to your children they will gain confidence. For example, you could allow your young child to hand you some dishes out of the dishwasher when unloading it. When folding dry laundry, let your child sort some of the socks. The tasks will help them feel as though they are being independent, while giving you a hand.
Get down to your child’s eye level. A child respects a parent who looks them in the eye when they are talking. A child appreciates a parent who will get down on the floor and play with them. If your child is always physically looking up to you then you’re missing something in your parenting style.
You need to listen to your children. That means when they’re telling you about their day, or when they’re explaining something they did wrong. Always listen to what they have to say and respect what they’re saying. Even if it sounds outlandish to you, it might make total sense to a three-year-old.
If your child has ADHD or a similar condition, it is important that you keep him or her busy. By giving these children plenty to do, you will channel their energy in positive ways and avoid difficulties. Make sure that your child’s daily schedule includes some physical activity, too, such as an hour of playtime at the park or an hour of bike riding.
Even though most parents work hard to give their children everything they need, sometimes it is not enough. I have two children and four grandchildren and believe the one thing children need from their parents is to know they are loved. Just giving them material things is not enough.
